Environmental Consulting
Since 1996, Collis Environmental Consulting has been providing the private sector with environmental assistance with stream stabilization designs and general erosion control through bioengineering. Jim Collis has been involved in the environmental field since 1977 and over the years has worked for government agencies, conservation authorities and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Currently, Collis Environmental Consulting works with the private sector and various townships in the South Georgian Bay area.
Trail Design
Jim has over 10 years experience with recreational trails, from the early stages involving trail layout and environmental impact studies through to project construction and maintenance implementation.
Pond Work
He has been involved with private pond consulting and can assist with work permit acquisition, pond design, pond maintenance, trouble-shooting nutrient enrichment problems, kick starting pond ecosystems as well as designing innovative pond aeration systems to improve overall pond health. Jim also designs and implements pond nature-scaping projects to naturalize pond areas and increase habitat opportunities for fish and wildlife. Some of the ponds he has designed, constructed and consulted on are found on several local farms, the Intrawest Property at Blue Mountain, Hidden Lake, Thornbury Apple Orchard Irrigation pond, and the Shelburne Pond Decommissioning Project to name a few.
Environmental Impact Studies
Environmental Impact Studies are all part of any permit process and Jim can assist property owners with impact studies relating to proposed property development plans, general site inventories including all flora and fauna identification for land transfers and cottage sales or development.

Using both manual and mechanical methods, they have been involved in the implementation of restoration projects in Southern Georgian Bay Peterborough and Toronto , and have consulted on projects for the Intrawest Pond at Blue Mountain, the Florida Everglades and the Oshawa Second Marsh.
Fisheries Work
Jim has considerable experience with most of the southern Georgian Bay fish inventories since 1990 and have used electro-fishing, trapnets, seine nets, creel census, and commercial boat collection to obtain data for various government agencies.
Stream Bank Bioengineering and Soil Stabilization
Jim's expertise in this area began in the early 1980's and he has been involved in slope stabilization through bioengineering on the Georgian Bay shoreline, the Niagara Escarpment, Otonabee River, as well as various Oshawa and Whitby Creeks.
Ganaraka Forest Project
The photo on this page is a bioengineering project Collis Environmental Consulting did in Ganaraka forest which involved a trail closure and subsequent re-vegetation and rehabilitation attempts using various bio-engineering methods like willow facines and livestakes as well as the use of native grass seed and straw geotextiles.
